Training and Professional Development

We are a University training department where students from many disciplines attend for attachments. Some are on clinical placements and others undertake audit, quality improvement and research projects with us, making significant contributions to the on-going service improvements, research and innovation that we champion. The doctors in the department supervise medical students and several hold University teaching positions and honorary contracts. The department also trains junior doctors from foundation to higher specialist training levels who undertake service improvement initiatives, audit and research and are key members of the multidisciplinary team providing excellent patient care. The consultants are Educational Supervisors delivering workplace based training which is highly regarded and regularly assessed to be one of the best performing training departments in the country. Higher medical professional exam pass rates for trainees are excellent, they successfully compete for many regional and national fellowships and along with the whole medical team regularly present their research and quality improvement initiatives at National Conferences.

The department has a regular programme of continuing professional development that is multi-professional and delivered in time protected from clinical commitments. The trust has a thorough mandatory training programme to support staff in delivering safe patient care, as well as providing educator development events to support delivery of work based education. Staff are encouraged to attend training events and study leave and budgets are available to facilitate this as appropriate.
